A few years ago, PC-tethered headsets set the quality benchmark for corporate VR training. In our projects, this has reversed: today almost every new training fleet is built on standalone, wireless devices.
The reason for the shift isn't primarily image quality, but logistics. A standalone headset fits in a bag, is ready to use within ten minutes in a meeting room or a factory floor, and doesn't require a powerful computer alongside it. For organizations training across multiple locations, this difference determines whether the training actually reaches everyone.
The main consideration today is device management. With ten headsets, content updates can still be handled manually; with fifty, they can't. At that point, the question becomes whether the fleet can be updated centrally, whether a specific training can be assigned to a specific group, and whether you can check who completed what and when. This layer should be planned together with the content, not added afterward.
What to watch out for: hygiene and charging are operational tasks, not minor details — for multi-user events, replaceable cushions and charging stations are just as important as the application itself. And for safety-critical or high-precision simulations, PC-tethered solutions still have their place: where real hardware needs to be connected to the system, cables remain the more reliable choice today.
