There's no universal answer to the question “is VR training more effective?” — based on our project experience, the answer depends on what skill is being taught and what it's being compared to.
Where VR consistently delivers an advantage. For tasks where practicing under real conditions is expensive, dangerous, or hard to organize regularly: intervention protocols, emergency response reactions, handling high-value equipment, rare fault scenarios. Here, VR doesn't replace the lecture — it makes practice repeatable.
Where it isn't worth it. For purely theoretical knowledge transfer — regulatory knowledge, process descriptions, terminology — VR rarely offers more than a well-designed e-learning course. In these cases, a three-dimensional environment is more of a distraction than a help.
How to measure it. Most corporate measurement stops at satisfaction, even though that's the weakest indicator. We recommend tracking four things: task completion time, the number and type of errors, the number of repetitions needed to reach the first flawless execution, and — if feasible — the error rate measured in the real work environment before and after training. The advantage of VR is precisely that this data is generated automatically: no separate measurement needs to be set up, since the simulator logs it.
What to do with the measurement data. In our experience, the data from the first run says more about the training than about the learner. If everyone fails at the same step, it's usually not a knowledge gap but an unclear instruction or a poorly designed interaction. It's worth planning an iteration after the pilot to address this.
