Save the Pros
A handball VR game featuring Veszprém players
About the project
What does it feel like to stand in your favorite team's goal as your favorite players take their shots? The Progressive BEX agency approached us with the idea of using Virtual Reality (VR) technology to let fans experience what it's like to stand in the Veszprém Aréna goal and try to save shots from the players. Enterprising fans who put on a VR headset found themselves on the Veszprém Aréna court, in front of one of the goals. After choosing the Beginner, Junior, or Pro level, users had to save 5 shots at each level before moving on to the next. The shots were taken by Veszprém players (e.g., Máté Lékai, Blaž Blagotinšek, Gašper Marguč), pre-recorded by the agency using a 360-degree camera. The main challenge for us was defining the save interaction. When the user reached the relevant area of the video in virtual space at the exact moment the ball passed through it, the shot was successfully saved. To increase the number of successful saves, we used markers in virtual space that, depending on the difficulty level, indicated the ball's expected arrival point in advance. The experience was made even more authentic by “Veszprém! Veszprém!” chants and other sound effects. Fans had the chance to try the game before, during halftime, and after the Telekom Veszprém – HC Meshkov Brest Champions League handball match on February 24.
