Digitális Vándor – E-Trail App for Hikers

About the project

We developed Hungary's newest trail-guide application for the Active and Ecotourism Development Center (AÖFK). The goal of the app is to bring existing educational trails across the country into digital form, as well as to create brand-new trails that exist only in the digital space, allowing users to enjoy their hikes both offline and online. The app is public and available on both platforms – iOS and Android alike. Users can register – even with their social media profiles – or use the app as a guest. The home screen presents a list of available e-trails, while the map view shows where the trails are located across the country. The selected tour can be downloaded before departure, so a lack of signal is never an issue. As users reach each station, the app sends a push notification confirming their arrival. Here, in addition to a photo and text description of the station, users encounter various playful tasks, such as: • Scanning a QR code • Answering a multiple-choice quiz question • Matching different elements • Entering an identifier (question and answer) After that, users can explore the digital content belonging to the station, which may include videos, audio files, or even an animated 3D model of a characteristic local creature, brought to life on the live camera view thanks to Augmented Reality (AR) technology. Users with a registered account receive badges for completed trails. These badges can be parameterized by season, national park, or even region. Earned badges and completed trails can also be shared on major social media platforms. The app's content management system offers various access levels, allowing great flexibility in managing the e-trails. Trail content can be created and instantly published in multiple languages.
