QR code-based access control system for the Hungary-Romania match

About the project

For the joint public viewing of the Hungary-Romania match held at 56-osok tere, we worked together with T-Mobile's IT team to create a paperless access control system that operates simply and quickly via QR codes on smartphones. T-Mobile sent the unique QR codes we provided as MMS messages to the football fan customers invited to the event's VIP sector. Upon arrival, guests opened this MMS, displaying their unique QR code on their phone screen. The hostesses handling registration then scanned these codes using a custom QR code reader we developed for their Android-based Samsung Advance smartphones. The application and the server solution behind it checked whether the QR code had indeed been sent out by T-Mobile and whether it had already been used. If the guest's QR code passed these software verification checks, the application displayed a large green circle to signal to the hostess that the guest could enter. However, if someone had already entered with that QR code, the application displayed a red circle. Despite the somewhat challenging conditions, our system performed very well, and we hope to be able to use it for further events in the future.
