CZ P-09 Pistol Virtual Assembly and Shooting

About the project

The CZ P-09 handgun was adopted by the police in 2018 and, a bit later, by the Hungarian Defence Forces as well. Following its introduction in Hungary, we were commissioned by the National University of Public Service to create a virtual reality application for target shooting with the CZ P-09. Upon entering the application, the user is greeted by a menu where they can decide whether to first assemble the pistol or go straight to shooting. Assembling the weapon follows a specific sequence, and attention must be paid to fitting the small components correctly. This mode of the application allows the user to learn that sequence. Once finished, they can move on to shooting with the pistol. Before starting to shoot, the user must select the distance they want to shoot at, ranging from 5 to 23 meters. Before firing, the user can put on ear protection. During shooting, the application immediately shows the impact mark of every bullet, as well as the score earned by each shot on the target. After emptying the magazine, the user receives a comprehensive scoreboard of their performance, which they can also send to themselves as a PDF. If the user turns away from the shooting position with a loaded weapon, the application immediately signals this with a loud alert and an on-screen message. Virtual pistol shooting, of course, cannot replace real shooting practice, but we recommend the application to everyone working in law enforcement and to anyone who enjoys shooting.
