Real-time visualization of physical properties of parts in AR
About the project
The Faculty of Informatics at Óbuda University approached our team to take part in an R&D project and develop an AR data visualization application. The University produces and 3D prints various physical bodies, each with different physical properties (hardness, tensile strength, etc.). The goal was to visually display these measurement data directly on the parts themselves, linking them to specific points on the finished bodies in AR space. CMS: The first step was to agree on a data specification defining what types of models the University could produce that would be compatible with the application we were building. Based on this, we built a CMS into which the client can upload models, data, and their units of measurement. The relationships between them are hierarchical and can be dynamically expanded. AR: The models uploaded by the University are linked to a QR code reader module, through which they appear in the application. On the client side, the data of the 3D body is displayed in groups, making the results of multiple measurements easy to review. Basic information, as well as images and videos via URL, can also be added to the bodies. Positioning: First, the QR code must be scanned, which loads the appropriate model and its associated information package. Then, a mesh of this model appears on a marker, on which the 3D printed object must be placed. When the digital model mesh and the real object are aligned, the data related to the object will appear precisely in AR space.
