About the project

VR technology is excellent for practicing predefined movements. Knife Fighting VR was developed on behalf of the Defense and Innovation Research Institute and was first presented at a defense conference in Paris. Designed together with soldiers, the application allows users to practice the fundamentals of knife fighting, meaning the 5 basic knife attack movements. The 4 cuts and 1 thrust must be started from different directions and the blade must be guided along a defined arc onto a practice dummy. Upon entering the application, the user can choose whether the practice dummy stays in one place throughout or changes position during the training. As soon as the training begins, the practice dummy appears, marked with the cutting arcs and the point where the user should start the cut. Only one cutting arc is shown on the dummy at a time, but as soon as the user completes it, another one immediately appears. A training session ends once the user has completed all the movements 5 times. At the end of the training, the user receives an easy-to-read table showing their performance. The main focus of this table is how well the user was able to follow the cutting arcs, and how much time and speed it took to complete them. The application is currently available in 4 languages: English, French, German, and Hungarian.
