Bringing a water treatment plant model to life with Augmented Reality
About the project
The Planet Budapest 2021 Sustainability Expo was held from November 29 to December 5, 2021, at the renewed Hungexpo exhibition halls. The purpose of the exhibition was to draw the public's attention, especially young people's, to unfavorable environmental, social and economic processes, and to show that these negative changes overshadowing humanity's future can still be reversed. We brought the 2x4-meter model of the Csepel water treatment plant to life, complementing it with lifelike 3D animations demonstrating its operation – so instead of a static sight, visitors encountered a dynamic, interactive model table that encouraged exploration. The 6 iPad Pros placed around the model table can be taken out of their stands and pointed at the circular print markers placed on the model to display the developed content. These digital 3D elements present the most important steps of the entire wastewater treatment process and supplement them with textual information in pop-up windows. This makes visible, for example, the incoming and outgoing sewer system, and the location and operation of the sedimentation and treatment equipment – right where it happens in reality. The solution is a great example of how a traditional exhibition setup – a model table – can be made exciting for today's visitors with the latest, most advanced technology.
